Wink Design Studio is really a one-woman show. Hi, I’m Rachel Jones.
Introduction to Magazine Design
I am proud to say that I had the benefit early on in my design career of working with an exceptional firm, Publication Design. The principals of the firm have been creating award-winning magazine designs for many years; their experience predates computer-aided design. They are experts in the field of magazine design, traveling around the world to consult on projects, to speak at seminars, and to train in-house design staff. Their client list is amazing, with many household names on it. I watched and listened and absorbed.
I am confident that I picked up at least a modicum of their collective design brilliance, and even this small bit of know-how helps me make my clients’ projects appealing and easy to read, which—as I learned from my mentors—is the purpose of media: to be read. If your audience can’t read your material they won’t get the point, no matter how pretty your design might be.
Other Design Education
I did go to college, although I feel my real-world experience served me much better. But I guess you have to start somewhere. I also worked at an ad agency, where I learned the art of Photoshopping everything to look catalog-perfect from two great designers. Their keen eyes taught me how to look at a piece and see what is wrong/off/misspelled. Never underestimate the value of multiple proof-checks.
I have learned something valuable from every place I’ve worked. I’m not naming all of them; if you want a resume, offer me a spectacular job I can’t turn down. But, in brief: I worked at a newspaper, where I learned from the editor to read clients’ minds in order to create ads they’d sign off on without missing our deadline. It’s a valuable skill to differentiate between what people really want and what they think they want. I know I don’t get it right the first time every time, but I try. And then I worked for a publisher who had a voracious mind and read constantly to stay on top of the latest in SEO and web site design. He reminded me that you should never stop learning, no matter what you think you already know. And so I keep reading.
I’ve been designing for well over a decade, and the best thing I can say for myself is that I try to make people happy, with the final product and with the experience. I’d love to try to do the same for you.
